Of Feathers, Frocks And Fabulousness

The feathers, they are done. DONE! I scream from the mountaintop. I am Captain of Mount Accomplishment! Never has Ruggy been so inundated with my trumpeting! On occasion, I know if I begin a hairbrained project, it will turn out the way I expect it to. In this case, I had a completely botched muslin of a wiggle dress, made from a stashed medium weight satin, I believe. This thing was overworked to death. For weeks, I thought I could wrangle it into a skirt and get something out of all that work, but the idea of measuring and slicing [...]

Military Jacket in Cotton Twill

Military jackets are very trendy right now. Last fall I made plans to make one, but didn’t get around to it until now. I used a thick cotton twill in aubergine from MoodFabrics.com. It was easy to work with and has a great woven texture which you can see in some of the close ups. This was the only design I liked from the May 2011 issue of Burda style. It is chalk full of interesting details: 20 buttons!, topstitching, sleeve cuffs, shoulder tabs, folding back front lapels, slanting back yokes and back belt. I opted not to trim it [...]

Double-Sided Wool Crepe Dress

I loved this pattern/silhouette as soon as it came out and I picked a green double-sided wool crepe from Mood back in August to sew it in.  I just needed the temperatures to drop to use it.  Of course since it’s the end of November, the temps have dropped so making and wearing the dress is perfect now. Some stats: Fabric ~ Green double-sided wool crepe from the Mood store in NYC Notions ~ Gray rayon bemberg lining One 6″ Riri zipper Vogue 8824 Pattern Alterations: Even though this pattern goes up to an XXL (size 24-26) in Vogue land, [...]

Italian Riviera Peplum

Whew! You have no idea how excited I am to finally have this peplum “dress” completed. It’s taken me over a month from cutting the fabric, to prepping the fabric, to putting in the last hand stitches. Since the peplum and skirt are actually two separate pieces, construction took twice as long as I expected. But, I did my best to not skimp on any of the steps – except maybe that last press to get the garment into ideal photo shape. Why not cut a corner here or there? Because this garment is actually destined to end up [...]

Ralph Lauren Houndstooth Wool Sheath Dress

You Ain’t Nothing but a Houndstooth Crying for accessories I made the dress for football games since both of the college teams my family pulls for are black and something. I finished it yesterday and their football seasons are almost over – something tells me it’s not going to make it to a game this year. So…….How about lunch with the girls dinner with my hubby…. or the annual “Twas Two Nights” family holiday get together? I have seen houndstooth dresses e v e r y w h e r e this fall and couldn’t resist this

Stripes Take Two

I’ve always wanted to try out those Japanese pattern books where the garments seem like little works of art. I finally got my hands on an English translation of Drape Drape 2 by Hisako Sato as a gift from the publisher, and I launched right into pattern number 2: one-piece side drape top. I might have launched myself in a bit too quickly though because after converting my bust measurement into centimeters and seeing I was about a small, I traced the S/M pattern for myself. It wasn’t until after I cut the pattern out from a bit of leftover [...]

Mood Sewing Network Fabric Giveaway!

When the going gets tough, the tough give away fabric! It has been a rough few days here in the Northeast, first with Hurricane Sandy doing her damage and then with the nor’easter dumping snow all over us. The good news though is that the power was finally restored to Mood’s NJ warehouse and we are working around the clock to get your orders out. But let’s talk about this fabric one lucky winner will receive. It’s a soft blend of wool, viscose and acrylic, and it feels like a lightweight sweater-knit. We think this would look fabulous as a [...]

Black is Back in Wool Satin

Sorry for the homespun photography. I am working on it! Black is one of my favorite colors. Alexander McQueen’s Dante collection in 1996, and Helmut Lang’s 80′s minimalistic designs in black leather made me yearn for strong black pieces in my wardrobe. With the revival of the 80s and partly 90s styles, minimalistic black clothes have become quintessential this season. alexander-mcqueen-pre-fall-2012 alexander-mcqueen-pre-fall-2012 So, why postpone the urge to create something that sober and strong. Walking in the wool section of the Mood, I found so many different blacks – all very enticing and rich. Yet I was drawn to a beautiful black wool satin. It has some [...]
