Go Ravens! Purple Friday Dress

I get called out on my lack of purple during football season. It’s really almost embarrassing in my particular office. I promised myself this was the year I’d have my Purple Friday dress. And, just like it was meant to be, when Mood Fabrics sent me this aubergine double twill as a sample of the fall season, I got super excited and ordered two yards straight away. Yes, double twill cotton. The material is 100 percent cotton, twill with a diagonal weave and very dense. It would make a great jacket, or a mod like dress with structure (oh, you […]

My Mood in October: Swingy Stripes

I’ve been in the mood for stripes lately – swingy stripes. For my big project this month, I wanted to find the perfect pattern to pair with a lovely striped wool jersey from Mood (sadly, out of stock, but here’s a similar, albeit narrower, stripe in the fetching combination of navy and pea green) that I bought with my Mood Sewing Network allowance. I was imagining a full, gathered skirt to take advantage of the beautiful drape in the fabric. When I was contacted by BurdaStyle about doing another guest post, I jumped at the chance to make their Swing […]

Tunic Time

If my favorite garments were ranked by how much wear they receive, this one would get the Blue Ribbon, the Silver Cup AND the Gold Medal. Now I get to see if my most recent tunic dress will earn its place on my list of favorites. Practicalities occasionally escape my aesthetic sensibilities, and I made the casual dress out of a silk charmeuse I bought at Mood Fabrics during my first, but hopefully not last trip to Mood Fabrics in December 2011. The easy structure, whimsical nature and versatility of many tunics continue to intrigue me. The trickiest part of sewing […]

Draped Aubergine Dress!

For Fall 2012, all shades of purple, plum, eggplant and aubergine are so hot for Fall that I had to embrace that color trend. This dress is New Look 6123.  It’s a juxtaposition of views C & D. I used a Ralph Lauren silk crepe de chine from Mood Fabrics.  It’s listed as “purple.”  I like to refer to it as “aubergine”.  It’s a pretty deep purple that looks almost navy or eggplant… depending on the lighting.  This fabric is gorgeous and it was a dream to work with.  And the drape is incredible. The alterations I made were to do a […]

Frabjous Mood October Paisley

When I entered Mood few weeks ago I knew I wanted to make a tailored skirt. Quick look in tweeds and suitings, and I found a perfect match for the style. But so it happens that I can never just buy fabric without exploring the store, in the quest for those one-of-a-kind designer pieces you probably won’t find anywhere else. I really hoped this time there was nothing that would distruct me from that perfect skirt I conceived in my mind… When one of the Mood employees asked me whether he could help me with anything, I mumbled ‘Er, paisley?’ Why did I […]

I’m in the Mood for Basics

Basics are the backbone of a good wardrobe and they give you the opportunity to get dressed every morning without having to stand in front of the closet going, “I have nuthin’ to wear!”  The two garments featured below are part of my “The City in Winter” Collection, the 13-piece wardrobe that I’m currently sewing.  The first garment is a gored skirt with a tulip hem that’s made from Simplicity 5194. Stats: Fabric ~ Wool crepe from Mood Fabrics – purchased in the NYC store but you can find some on the website, here. Notions ~  9″ brown invisible zipper black […]

Carolina Herrera Brocade Jacket

I sure have missed my blogging friends! I have been so eager to post anything just to say hello while I was taking care of a patient, hosting a party at my home followed by entertaining out-of-town company immediately upon returning from our unforgettable vacation to the Mediterranean. The patient is fine, the party was fun, the company found its way to a football game in Florida, and I hit the sewing machine after a four-week break. I imagined this beautiful brocade from Mood Fabrics as numerous garments: My husband suggested I make a close-fitting special occasion dress which […]

Slow and Steady is the Mood

Well.  Y’all had some excellent suggestions on getting the sewjo mojo back, many of which I implemented to get this dress past the “folded up and staring accusingly at me” stage.  In fact, there were so many great ideas I’ll be doing a little credited wrap up on le blog later, a mojo-maker, if you will.  (Oh now come on, if that isn’t a cocktail waiting to be made I don’t know what is.  Must get Ruggy on that.) Speaking of Ruggy, my reluctant photographer was unavailable this weekend, so I had to go all self-timer on these shots.  Wanting […]

Inspired by Pinterest | Pink & Red!

I’ve been needing to add cool basics to my wardrobe.  Let’s face it, sometimes I just want to throw on a pair of jeans.  But since I’m no where near a “jeans & t-shirt” kinda girl, I need some cute tops.  You’ll notice a few of those being added to my wardrobe in the near future. Inspiration: Thanks to Pinterest, I’ve found the loveliest of lovely color combinations:  pink and red. It screams Valentine’s Day, I know.  But I love it anyway. I used Rachel Comey’s pattern, Vogue 1323 for my top.  If you had only looked at the extremely […]
