My Mood in September: Blue Plaid

This shirt was supposed to be done before my birthday so that my husband could wear it to my birthday party. But, disaster struck at the next to last step. The problem: a poorly cut buttonhole. The almost-never-used buttonhole just above the button placket on the collar stand. The one that no one would have even noticed had I not snipped it open in the first place. That’ll teach me not to cut open a buttonhole willy nilly. The save: a new collar stand. Thankfully, collar stands use very little fabric. Everything else about the making of this shirt went […]

Finished: Leather Top

Just a quick post to show you the leather top I recently finished. Seeing all the leather on the runways and in the fashion magazines had me chomping at the bit to add some more leather to my wardrobe. For this top I took a leather/wool jersey top I made last year and was never in love with, and used the leather for the center panel (light tan). Deep burgundy leather makes up the sides, sleeves and back. I was able to sew this up rather quickly because I used a tried-and-true pattern, Cynthia Rowley Simplicity 2192, which is a […]

More About Becoming a Mood Sewing Network Blogger

Hi, and welcome to the Mood Sewing Network! We hope you like what you see and will come back often. The great thing about these nine bloggers is that they’re all very different from each other in their tastes, styles and sewing levels, so we feel pretty confident that you’ll find one or more bloggers who match your own sewing perspective. At some point in the future we plan on expanding the network beyond the nine women chosen for the launch. In fact, we’ve already gotten some emails and phone calls about becoming a Mood Sewing Network blogger. So you […]

Butterick 5147 Thrice

I made two really involved dresses during the sewcation.  I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that my garments are taking more time now because I do own a lot of clothing so I can take more time with my pieces.  However, I needed a palette cleanser. Something that worked well with the transitional garments I’ve already made.  So I guess I really am thinking about fall…just not ready to go all out wool sewing yet! As the title of the post states, this will be my third version of this dress.  I’ve worn the other two dresses a couple of […]

The Officiant Dress

Saturday night I officiated my friend’s wedding. It was beautiful! Her dress was amazing. Like, seriously, amazing. Not only did I finish my dress on time, I had several people tell me how well the dress colors fit into her plum and grey wedding. Since there was a large NYC / PR / fashion contingency, I was asked a few times if I was a designer. Well, first they asked if I had a theater background and then when they found out I made my dress, they asked I was a designer. It’s so funny how it just doesn’t occur […]

Making of the Godet Skirt

Soaring temperatures and humidity in New York these past days are not particularly stimulating to start working on a fall wardrobe. I must admit, usually, fall pieces lounge on my work table waaay past winter months. So, actually, I am quite happy I had an early kick-start, and here is the latest project, made after a month-long holiday break. With the help of Susan Khalje – founder of the Couture Sewing School, author of Bridal Couture, and contributing editor to Threads magazine – I made a couture version of the Godet Pencil Skirt from the August 2012 issue of burda […]

My Mood in August: Just Add a Bow

After a time intensive make like my mom’s dress, I wanted something quick and easy. What better than a Sewaholic Renfrew with a twist in a silk jersey that I received from Mood. Sadly, I can’t find the fabric online anymore. I blame Goodbye Valentino and her gorgeous dress: how could her readers not buy up the rest of this fabric already? The twist is the bow I added to the neckline to fancy up this basic T. Now you see it: Now you don’t: I got the idea from The Sew Convert‘s Jason Wu Bow Dress. I cut the […]

Celebration Time

On August 31, 2011 I turned over a new leaf I gave up buying Ready-to-Wear clothing for one year and vowed to make my clothes instead. Today I’m celebrating because I not only set out to do what I intended, but I completed an experience that brought me great pleasure and satisfaction. I must have needed a challenge! I was spending huge amounts of money on clothes and was constantly shopping. I bought way too many clothes that looked alike, and had entirely too many clothes that were barely worn. One day I snapped, gave up shopping, began sewing my […]
